Canada Nationally Recognizes ISCC Canada CFR: A Sustainability Standard Compliant with the Canadian Clean Fuel Regulations
We are pleased to announce another significant milestone for ISCC! Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), the branch of the Canadian government responsible for coordinating environmental policies and programs, has approved ISCC as a certification system meeting the sustainability criteria under Canada's Clean Fuel Regulations (CFR).
Following a comprehensive evaluation process, ECCC confirmed that ISCC fulfills the certification requirements stipulated in Section 62 of the Canadian CFR. This recognition is based on the ISCC PLUS certification requirements, which will serve as the foundation for the new ISCC Canada CFR certification system.
Under the agreement dated February 26, 2025, grain harvesters and primary collection points supplying agricultural or forestry-based feedstocks to CFR-regulated entities or foreign suppliers will soon be eligible to seek certification under ISCC Canada CFR. This certification will enable entities along the Low Carbon Intensity Fuel (LCIF) supply chain to reliably and transparently demonstrate compliance with the land use and biodiversity criteria set out in the CFR.
"ECCC is pleased to add ISCC Canada CFR as an approved certification system under the Clean Fuel Regulations for qualifying feedstocks. The use of sustainable feedstocks is an essential part of the CFR. Third-party certification serves as a useful tool for fuel producers to demonstrate compliance with the land use and biodiversity criteria under the CFR," said Lisa Ryan, Acting Executive Director of the Low Carbon Fuels Division at the Carbon Markets Bureau, Environment and Climate Change Canada.
As ISCC continues to expand its global reach and operations, the ISCC Canada CFR certification system will support companies operating in or trading with Canada in meeting the sustainability requirements under the CFR. This initiative will further contribute to the carbon intensity reduction targets of Canadian fuel producers and importers and promote the adoption of low-carbon fuels.
